Your Travel Guide to Thailand
All information & tips to prepare your trip in Thailand
The small island of Koh Ngai (or Koh Hai, you will find both spellings) is one of the popular islands off the coast of Trang. Its long beach of fine white sand faces a turquoise sea which also offers interesting snorkeling spots a little further offshore but easily accessible (the water is shallow). We are in a postcard setting, ideal for relaxing. The beach is lined with resorts, most of them rather luxurious. It is even a general trend on Koh Ngai, to move towards luxury. Small, simple resorts or even campsites are increasingly giving way to more comfortable, more upscale and obviously significantly more expensive hotels.
Just like its neighbor Koh Kradan, Ko Ngai has no local life and is only dedicated to tourism. The only buildings on the island are hotel complexes or restaurants.
The main beach and the pier are on the eastern side and there is a small beach with the sweet name of Paradise Beach, more confidential and not very busy, on the other side. It is reached by a half-hour walk through the forest.
Koh Ngai hotels are more of a higher category resort, especially in price. Over the years, the cheap accommodations have disappeared but there are still some left. My favorite comfort/price ratio is the Koh Ngai Seafood Resort with very good hard bungalows (some have no air conditioning and only fans) and an excellent restaurant.
When trying to book a hotel in Koh Ngai, you will often come across the Koh Ngai Resort but it is located at the pier on a not very beautiful stretch of beach, I recommend the other complexes on the large neighboring beach. A small path, very steep and complicated to take with luggage, even a big backpack, connects the pier and the main beach and longtail boats transfer you between the pier and the main beach (100 THB per person).
Koh Ngai is not a backpacker destination! You need to budget a lot for accommodation and food. And the trend is always more luxurious and expensive. Even if there are still 2-3 resorts at reasonable prices. Koh Ngai is an island where staying is relatively expensive (for Thailand).
While there are resorts open all year round, like the Fantasy Resort, from June to the end of October, during the low season and also the period when the weather is rather unfavorable (especially from mid-August to November), many establishments are closed. It is mainly Thais who come. As in addition, the interesting excursions, including the Emerald Cave, no longer take place because they are prohibited by the authorities, I do not recommend you to go to Koh Ngai at this time.
It seems to me that there are still no ATMs (cash machines) on Koh Ngai, so come with cash and plan large because the prices of bungalows and especially restaurants are on average 3 times higher here than on the continent. There are also no convenience stores, just a minimart with prices also 3 times higher.
ATTENTION: for boat crossings to and from Koh Ngai, it is quite rare that there are life jackets for children. Plan ahead and try to buy some, they cost less than 200 THB. Otherwise, go through Trang Wonders agency, they can lend you some if you come back to Trang or sell you some if you don't come back to their agency after your visits to the Trang islands.
Koh Ngai is on the ferry line between Phuket and Koh Lipe and on several speedboat lines. It is therefore very easy to get there from Phuket, Koh Lanta, the other islands of Trang, Trang of course and Koh Lipe. In high season, because in low season, there are only boats from Pak Meng Pier 40 kilometers from Trang.
From Bangkok, you can come by train to Trang (I recommend the night train because it is very long, book HERE) then go to an agency opposite the station to organize your transfer to Koh Ngai or organize it in advance via our agency Trang Wonders.
Otherwise, by plane, the companies Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Air Asia offer flights to Trang from Don Muang airport. In the arrival hall of Trang airport, there is a kiosk that will offer you transfers, often private, van then boat to Koh Ngai otherwise, once again book it in advance via our travel agency in Trang. Air Asia's plane + transfer packages were canceled with COVID and have never been put back in place since.
There are no roads on Koh Ngai, no scooters anymore, all travel is done on foot or by longtail boat as to go from the main beach to the pier or from one end of the beach to the other (100 TB per person). There is also a steep path between the main beach (after the Thanya Resort) and the pier and a path in the forest that leads to the Paradise Beach which is located at the top of the same resort.
The best time to come to Koh Ngai is from December to March knowing that during the low season from May to the end of October, when it rains the most, tourism activity is very limited and most of the resorts on Koh Ngai and other Trang islands are closed.
We have been waiting for it for months, hoping it will happen on July 1, but it will finally be October 1, 2022, when Thailand will lift the last COVID restrictions to enter the country. From this date, it will no longer be necessary to show...
