Practical information about traveling by bus in Thailand

Bus is the number one transportation for long distance trips in Thailand. The network is very large, the bus rotations are numerous. There are public buses which are the less expensive and many private companies offering VIP bus with a little more comfort and better service. Most buses expect for local buses coering small distances are in very good condition and air conditioned. The average speed depends on the selected bus and is around 60 to 70 km/h.

By bus, you can go almost anywhere you want in Thailand. This is the most used public transportation in the country. The price is very affordable especially for public buses and more expensive if you choose VIP Buses which generally offer more comfortable seats, a bottle of water and one or more meals included in the price. Sometimes, movies or TV shows are broadcasted on board, but only in Thai. In thailand, you can hail the buses from the side of the road like taxis and just buy a ticket once on board. No need to go to the bus terminal. Similarly if you want to get off at any time during the trip, just alert the driver and bus attendant and they will drop you off. If you visit the islands, you can buy directly a bus + ferry ticket. In buses, there is no limit on luggage and no extra fee to pay if you have a heavy one. Each city has its bus terminal where you can go and buy your tickets. If travel agencies also offer to sell bus tickets, buy them directly to the counter at bus terminals, it is cheaper and you compare the prices of different bus companies or find the schedule that is the suitable for you. Bangkok has three major bus terminals, each with its region of destination. Mochit, the largest one is the gateway to towns in the North of Thailand and also offers some departures for cities in the South or in the East, Sai Tai Mai offers buses to the South and Ekkamai to the East of the country. Sometimes terminals are located outside the city and you have to take a taxi, tuk tuk, songthaew or other means of transportation to reach them.

Note that there are persistent rumors of thefts in bus leaving from Khao San Road and in buses during ferry transfers. However, apart from these two cases, the thefts are extremely rare if not nonexistent.

Being able to speak some Thai can help to navigate through the bus system in Thailand. Consulting with locals about local bus schedules and best routes will be a lot easier. Mini vans in Thailand

Most minivans in Thailand are operating on the same lines as the buses. They are a little more expensive but not that much. Depending on your destination, sometimes you do not have the choice but if you hesitate between taking a minivan or a bus, be aware that minivans drivers often have a much sportier and even risky driving than bus drivers. The speed is the main minvans' selling point. If you are tall you may have not a lot of room for your legs and sometimes you have to pay an extra seat if are not traveling alone and have heavy luggage.

Direct bus to the temples of Angkor

Buses leave from Mo Chit in Bangkok to Siem Reap in Cambodia where the temples of Angkor are. It is a 8-9 hours journey to go, cross the border, do visa and continue your bus trip to your final destination. It happens occasionally that the domestic flights are cheaper or just a little more expensive than a long bus trip.
