Phu Tok Chiang Khan Viewpoint
Phu Thok mountain is 6 kilometers away from Chiang Khan city. It provides a high view over the city, the Mekong River, Laos on the other bank and the surrounding mountains. It is particularly popular at dawn to watch the sunrise of course but also to see the sea of mist (very dependent on the weather).

It is the most popular spot for sunrise in the area but I discovered one that I find much nicer and is more confidential. I am keeping it secret, for the moment, as it is an exclusivity for the program of the trip in Isan offered by my agency.

The altitude of Phu Tok is not very high. Some would call it more hill than mountain. But it offers a high enough view of the valley to be interesting. Especially when the morning fog transforms into a pretty sea of mist that you overlook from up there. It's a spectacle that can't be seen every morning because it depends a lot on the weather. The best time to visit Phu Tok in Chiang Khan and see this foggy phenomenon is between October and December, when the air is humid and cold.

To avoid too much traffic on the winding road that climbs to the top of Phu Tok, private vehicles are not allowed. Visitors park in a car park on the plain and must use the pickup trucks service which shuttles between the top of the mountain and the car park (paid service, see below).

Note that at the top, there are no sellers, nor toilets. But there are some in the pickup departure area. So if you want to eat something while admiring the view, buy what you need before going up or bring it with you. Also bring some warm clothes because it can be chilly, especially in the back of the pickups with the wind.

Practical information about Phu Tok

Cost of the pickup that takes you from the parking lot to the summit: 40 THB per person (round trip). The pickup service operates every day from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. There are more cars in the morning when they open and at the end of the afternoon. Between, it's more sporadic.
Cost of parking : 20 baht.
You stay as long as you want at the top. To get back down, you can get into any pickup truck. You just have to get down before the end of the pickup service.

How to get to Phu Tok ?

Mount Phu Tok is not very far from the city. It takes a little over 10 minutes to get there from Chiang Khan city. A tuk-tuk ride should cost around 200 THB. If you want him to take you to Phu Tok and wait for you in the parking lot to then bring you back in town, you will have to negotiate the price with the tuk-tuk driver. Or take his phone number to call him and make him come back to pick you up when you're done. Most hotels in Chiang Khan can organize this for you.
