Phitsanulok province is located in the lower part of northern Thailand. It is a destination mainly frequented by foreign tourists because its city has the closest station to Sukhothai and its historical park so get there by train then take a bus to Sukhothai is the cheapest way to reach the UNESCO site. But the city and the province have interesting historical and natural sites.
The most important temple of Phitsanulok is Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat with its famous Buddha Phra Buddha Chinnarat, located in town on the riverbank. There are other historic temples in town including ruins from the Sukhothai period. On the nature side, note some waterfalls and the Phu Hin Rongka national park. The corner of Ban Rak Thai (not to be confused with its much better known namesake of Mae Hong Son province< /a>) is also pretty for a getaway in the mountains. Just like Noen Maprang, its amazing mountains and its bat cave that comes out in a long cloud at nightfall.
The town of Phitsanulok, sometimes called pilok also has a daily night market along the river and a Walking Street on weekends. It is also known for its flying vegetables... yes, yes!
Phitsanulok is one of the largest cities of North Thailand. Crossroads of the roads to north, it was the capital of the kingdom for a quarter of century.
