mae hong son

Province of region Northern Thailand

Located in the very north of Thailand, on the border with Myanmar (formerly Burma), the province of Mae Hong Son is made up of a large city and remote mountains with small villages. It is an enchanting destination that woos with its unspoiled natural beauty, authentic tribal villages, peaceful ambiance and freshness. Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, perched on a hill overlooking the city, offers panoramic views with, at times, a sea of mist. In town, we note the lake and its two pagodas on the edge and the night market which is taking place. It is the most charming corner of the city which also has some other interesting Buddhist temples.

Despite its airport, Mae Hong Son remains little visited by foreign tourists. The loop between here and Chiang Mai which passes through Paï and Soppong is nevertheless one of the most popular for bikers. Between the village of Ban Rak Thai, known for its tea plantations, other small mountain villages with breathtaking views like Ban Jabo, its caves, including the most famous, the Tham Lot, its hot springs, its bamboo bridge which spans the rice fields, its rice terraces, waterfalls and its traditions like those of Poy Sang Long, it is a destination off the beaten track because it is not the quickest to access but which is worth the detour precisely because it is not very touristy and full of charm.

Pai

Charming small town in the North of Thailand, near the Burmese border, Pai is halfway between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son. Its valley with its often foggy landscapes of mountains, rice fields and the surrounding nature are its main assets. It is also the starting point for treks to meet the hill tribes, or simply the lush nature. It is a place for relaxation for lovers of nature and authenticity....
