About fifteen kilometers outside Kanchanaburi city, right next to another temple, Wat Tham Khao Noi, this recent temple, its construction dates from 1971, in pure Thai style is perched on a small hill. It has a huge 18 meters high and 10 meters wide seated Buddha covered with golden mosaics, visible from afar, built in 1973. There is a climb of 157 steps to access it or you can take a small cable car. Up there, the 360 degrees views of the surroundings and their rice fields are superb. The other important element of the temple is its quite atypical 7-storeys chedi in which I recommend you to climb at least for the view of the Buddha from the windows.
There are also several cafes and restaurants in the area with the rice fields and the hill and temple as a setting. Wat Tham Suea in Kanchanaburi owes its name of Tiger Cave Temple to the fact that its cave was once home to tiger family. The caves are now closed to the public. This is not the only temple in Thailand to have this name, there is a very famous Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi province known for the 1260 steps to climb to reach its highest point.

How to get to Wat Tham Sua ?
There is no public transport to come to the temple but you can hire a songthaew (pickup with benches at the back) to take you there. From Kanachanaburi city, it will cost you around 800 THB for a round trip regardless of the number of passengers with 1 hour to visit the temple. You will find songthaews outside Kanchanaburi bus terminal or train station. Negotiate the price before getting on knowing that you can take a more complete tour by adding the visit to Wat Ban Tham and the Crystal Cave and then the price should be around THB 1,000.
