The Chiang Dao cave temple ('tham' in Thai means 'cave') is the must visit place when you come here. Located 5 kilometers from the city, Wat Tham Chiang Dao also has a pond with a beautiful turquoise water in which swim big fish well fed by the visitors. A covered staircase leads to the entrance to the main caves. One is illuminated and can be visited by yourself without any worry, you just have to pay an entrance fee to pay for electricity. All the other caves open to the public require to hire of a local guide with a petroleum lamp. It is not essential if you have your own lamp but it now seems mandatory (if you trust the signs).
Practical information about Wat Tham Chiang Dao
Entrance: 40 THB (to pay for the lighting of the cave)
Guide price for caves with no light: 200 THB
The guides are on site but you can also hire one to visit the whole Chiang Dao area by calling this number provided by TAT: 053 456 442 (I have not tested)
To go visit Wat Tham Chiang Dao, you can also book one of the tours above.
How to get to Wat Tham Chiang Dao ?
The songthaew ride from Chiang Dao bus station to Wat Tham Chiang Dao will cost you 150 THB per person but there are not many on week days. Anyway the most popular guesthouses in Chiang Dao are just a few minutes walk away.
