Nam Phan Lake is located in Sang Khom district (the locals often call it
Sang Khom lake) about 60 kilometers north-east of Udon Thani. Here, there are no pink lotus like at
Talay Bua Daeng but dozens of floating bamboo huts. It is a very popular place among the locals who comes here to eat and have fun with friends and family. The principle is simple: you order your meal at restaurants on the lake banks and then take place in a floating hut that a boat pulls to the middle of the lake before coming back a little later to bring you your food and drinks. You can eat, make barbecue and jump in the water to cool off. There are several lakes in Isan,, the Northeastern region of Thailand, offering the same service.
In high season, especially on weekends, there is a big crowd and thousands of floating houses on the lake ! In low season and during week days (when I was there), customers are a lot less numerous but there usually are at least one or two restaurants open. Come here for lunch only, it is closed in the evening.
