Presentation Elephant Surin Project

reviews My opinion: starstarstarstar
Member of the Save Elephant Foundation, Elephant Study Center in Surin province is in an ancient Kui village, Baan Tha Klang. In 2009, Sangduen Lek Chailert founded the Surin Project to support the mahouts living in the Surin Elephant Study Center and offer their elephants a better life. Each mahout who joins the project, receive a monthly salary to fully support his family. In return, each mahout must agree to follow some rules like unchaining his elephant at least three hours per day, no longer take part in elephant shows or offer tourists to ride his elephant. If you wish, you can volunteer in the center and take care of the elephants. If you are interested, please visit www.elephantnaturepark.org
Just next to the Study Center, there is an elephant park who offers shows and elephant rides but has nothing to do with the Surin Elephant Project which fight exploitation of elephants for tourism.

Practical information about Elephant Surin Project

There are homestays in the area (see here Ban Ta Klang Homestay or homestays in Kra Pho)

How to get to Elephant Surin Project ?

Only songthaew 4450 is going to Baan Tha Klang. It can take you there for 50 THB but the journey takes more than 1,5 hour this and line is not very active. There is in theory a songthaew every hour in the morning starting at 8.30 am and less in the afternoon for the return, the last one leaves at 16:30 but do not necessarily go to the Baan Tha Klang but only in the village of Kra Pho (next to the temple) 3.6 km away.
By car, take the highway 214 towards Roi Et and turn left at mile 36 just before Tha Tum, then it will remain 22 km with many signs indicating the Elephant village. But if you are volunterring at the Elphant Study Center, they can arrange pick-up in Surin.
