The province of Kamphaeng Phet

General information about the province of Kamphaeng Phet

Province capital: Kamphaeng Phet
Name in Thai: กำแพงเพชร

Location on map

kamphaeng phet

Province of region Northern Thailand

Located in the central region of Thailand, Kamphaeng Phet province is a destination steeped in history and culture. Much less known than its neighbors Sukhothai and even Si Satchanalai, it also has a pretty historical park also listed as a UNESCO world heritage site , which houses ruins of temples dating from the same period. It notably houses Wat Phra Kaew and its 2 large stone Buddhas, one reclining and 2 seated. It is, I would say to caricature, Sukhothai off the beaten track! The town on the banks of the Ping River (the same one that goes up to Chiang Mai) is a nice provincial town with some interesting temples and a pleasant night market. We will also note its historical museum, national parks with waterfalls, hot springs and NaKhon Chum and its large Burmese style chedi.

Travelers can also explore the remains of the ancient city of Kamphaeng Phet, such as the city walls and ancient gates, as well as the traditional Buddhist temples in the area. Kamphaeng Phet is also known for its lively markets and local crafts.

They also organize a very nice Songkran festival. In any case, which I like because it is really aimed at Thais because foreign tourists remain very rare in Kamphang Phet.

Whether exploring ancient history, visiting archaeological sites or relaxing in a typical provincial town, Kamphaeng Phet province offers an alternative off the main tourist routes to Ayutthaya and Sukhothai.

Destinations to visit in Kamphaeng Phet

Kamphaeng Phet

Located 77 km from Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet attracts far fewer visitors. Nevertheless its Historical Park also worth a visit especially for the 3 Buddha of Wat Phra Kaew. UNESCO World Heritage since December 12, 1991, this large park in the forest adjacent to the city contains many temple remains. It is a good place for cycling around and a good introduction to Sukhothai visit although its temples are in lot poorer condition. History and temples fan will also add Si Satchanalai to the program. ...
