Information about Lamphun One Hundred Thousand lanternes & Loy Krathong Festival

Every year, the small town of Lamphun located about thirty kilometers south of Chiang Mai organizes its Festival of 100,000 Lanterns at Wat Hariphunchai. The festival starts several weeks before Loy Krathong and ends on Loy Krathong day. This temple is also a very good place to celebrate this Buddhist festival.

What makes this festival magical are the tens of thousands of colorful traditional lanterns that are hung in the courtyard of Wat Phra That Hariphunchai temple. At night, it’s just magical!

Two days before Loy Krathong, there is a big procession which takes place around 6 p.m. And on the day of Loy Krathong, in addition to the prayers at the temple and the colorful lanterns hung, the inhabitants put their krathongs (small homemade rafts topped with a candle and 3 incense sticks) into the water in the nearby river. /p>
