Travel guide to go and visit Nang Rong

Nang Rong city is about 50 km south from Buriram, tourists mostly come here to visit Phanom Rung temple, a magnificent Khmer temple perched on an extinct volcano. 28 kilometers away from the temple, Nang Rong is the last real town before Phanom Rung Historical Park. The most visited attrctions here are Phanom Rung temple with its long paved walkway above the big staircase leading to the temple and Prasat Hin Muang Tam, a beautifully restored small khmer temple with four basins (8 km from Phanom Rung).
The city itself has no tourist attraction. Besides the night market, there is not much entertainment in the evening. If you leave in the early morning, it is possible to visit the temples and come back by bus (2h30 per trip) in the same day from Nakhon Ratchasima. But it is better to take your time and sleep in Nang Rong. Especially because before 10:30, there are fewer visitors in Phanom Rung.

Warning: if you don't come with your own ransportation, probably prefer Buriram to Nang Rong as a starting point to visit the khmer temples. Since Honey Inn closed, it is almost impossible for a foreign tourist to rent a scooter in Nang Rong. Finding a driver with a car (around 1,000 THB a day), or even a motorcycle taxi, will probably be a bit complicated also with the language barrier being stronger here than in Buriram.

Accommodations in Nang Rong

In Nang Rong, there are hotels in the city, generally not too far from the Bus Terminal and hotels in the surrounding countryside. Choose what you prefer. In an accommodation in the city you will not be dependent on your hotel or guesthouse to arrange visits to the magnificent Khmer temple of [ur=/eng/see-visit-thailand/phanom-rung-nang-rong-87]Phanom Rung[/url ] and other interesting attractions in the area or to take a bus to continue your journey in Thailand. We advise those who want to visit Phanom Rung to sleep rather in Nang Rong than in Buriram. Here you will be closer and Buriram has not much more to offer.

Practical information about Nang Rong

There is only a few hotels and guesthouses in Nang Rong city but in the vicinity, there are other accommodation often in a more bucolic setting. To explore the temples, it is highly recommende to be transported because there Honey Inn which offered scooter to rent to foreigners closed. Phanom Rung and Muang Tam are very easy to find even without a map, the roads are well signposted.

How to get around in Nang Rong ?

You can get around in Nang Rong city by walking. This is a fairly small town. By cons to go to Phanom Rung and other attractions outside the city, you will need transportation. last time I checked, it was impossible for a foreign tourist to rent a motorbike in Nang Rong (Honey inn which provided bikes and car for rent closed 1 year after COVID started). So it is better to come to Nang Rong with your own transportation or visit the area from Buriram.

Khmer temple built on top of an extinct volcano . You access to it by a long paved walkway and a beautiful staircase. Very unique! With the temple of Phimai, these are the two finest Khmer temples in Thailand.

Prasat Muang Tam

8 km from the Phanom Rung, this small Khmer temple has been wonderfully restored. A visit to do before or after Phanom Rung visit.

Weather & climate in Nang Rong

Nang Rong has a tropical savanna climate. Winters (from December to February) are particularly dry. The rainy season begins in mid-April and ends in November when you have ponctual brief torrential rainfall. In May and September rains are more important. Temperatures remain warm even during the monsoon season.

The best time to come to Nang Rong is from December to the end of March. The rest of the year, you have heavy punctual showers but before and after them, in general, the weather is quite pleasant. Maybe avoid to come here in ay and Spetember, the rainiest months of the year.
