Wat Traimit Temple is mainly known for its golden Buddha and sometimes the Golden Buddha Temple. The statue dates from the Sukhothai period and is the world's largest solid gold statue, with a weight of 5.5 tons. What's funny is the fact that it was rediscovered by accident. In 1954 a new building was constructed to house the large Buddha was moved the next year to its new location. During the last attempt o lift the statue from its pedestal, the ropes broke, and the statue fell hard on the ground and some of the plaster coating chipped off, allowing the gold surface underneath to be seen. The paster cover was probably put on the statue to hidde it and prevent it from robery.
Architecturally the temple that now houses the 3 meters high Buddha is not the most interesting in Bangkok, it still houses two museums: one about the discovery of the statue and the other dedicated to the history of Chinatown, the area where Wat Traimit is located.
