Your Travel Guide to Thailand
All information & tips to prepare your trip in Thailand
The Surat Thani Railway Station, opened in 1915, is an important stop on the southern railway line of Thailand that goes to Malaysia. It is also a transit point for travelers going to the islands of the Gulf of Thailand Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, thanks to its connection with ferries from the port of Donsak or for those who want to go on a ,excursion to Khao Sok.
Please note that the station is not located in the city of Surat Thani but 12 kilometers from the city of Surat Thani, in the district of Phunphin. It was originally called Phun Phin Station. There is a local bus that shuttles but it is something to take into account.
Tickets for short and long distance trains, especially to Bangkok, can be purchased at the ticket office of the station before departure. There is almost always space in at least 3rd class, but for nuti trains to and from Bangkok, it is imperative to book your train tickets in advance or there will be no more berths available. Tickets officially go on sale 6 months (180 days to be exact) before the departure date. They can be booked online via the official website or via this great Thailand transport booking site: 12go.asia
There is a luggage storage service at Surat Thani station. It is located on the platform to the left. The local bus that connects the station to Surat Thani city and especially its bus terminal is located on the left side just as you exit. This is also where you will find taxi services. While the WUT Travel agency which offers minivans to Khao Sok (see here) or van + ferry packages to Koh Samui or the neighboring islands ( book online here) is a little further, still on the left, on the large parking lot.
As said, Surat Thani Train Station is located 12 km from the city center, in the Phunphin district. To get there from Surat Thani, you can take a taxi, a tuk-tuk, or the red local bus that connects the city bus terminal to the train station. The journey takes about 40 minutes depending on traffic.
For those coming from further afield, such as Donsak Port (for Koh Samui and Koh Phangan), buses, minivans and taxis are also available for an easy transfer to the station but the best thing if you are coming from islands like Koh Samui is to take a full ferry + van package to the station which you can (book here. There are also passenger minivans from Khao Sok that drop you off directly at Surat Thani Train Station (see here).
