Our 5 favorite historical parks in Thailand
In Thailand, there are many sites that are called “Historical Park”. Here are our favorite historical parks, a subjective ranking relying on careful visits of each of them and some others …
The Sukhothai Historical Park, the most famous in the country and probably the largest one. It includes many ruins of temples from the time the city was a thriving capital of the Kingdom of Siam. A must go for any cultural tour in Thailand. |
Ayutthaya Historical Park, also a former glorious capital of the Kingdom before the invasion of the Burmese. The built-in city park includes several temples including the Sri Sanphet and its 3 chedis, symbol of the city and Wat Mahathat and its famous Buddha head trapped in a tree.

The Phanom Rung Historical Park, which contains only the temple of Phanom Rung temple but what a temple ! And especially what paved driveway that ends with stairs ! Here we have a jewel of Khmer architecture in Thailand. |
The Kampheang Phet Historical Park, about sixty kilometers from Sukhothai, it is much less known but worth to visit at least only for the three great Buddhas at Wat Phra Keaw. |
Phimai Historical Park, very small since it only contains the Prasat Phimai, another famous Khmer temple in Thailand. With more modest dimensions, it has many architectural similarities with Angkor Wat in Cambodia. |
Note that all the parks mentioned are listed as UNESCO World Heritage.
