Loy Krathong 2nd most amazing festival in the world

The website Skyscanner.net has released a ranking of the 10 most amazing festivals in the world and Loy Krathong takes the second place behind the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in the United States and before the Rio of Janeiro Carnival. The website mentions the events that are taking place in Sukhothai Historical Park but Loy Krathong is celebrated all around Thailand.

Loy Krathong

In case you want to do some scientific calculations, the Loy Krathong Festival, sometimes called in a reductive way “Lantern Festival” is held every year during the full moon of the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar. OK, I help you a bit, it usually is in November. This year it will take place November 17, 2013. We already wrote an article on the subject but in summary, during this festival, Thai people build small water rafts beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and incense sticks on board and put them on the rivers. This is also an opportunity to let go in the sky thousands of lanterns. Not to mention the fireworks and other lights and sounds shows, the most famous being in Sukhothai, in some cities. This is actually very spectacular and the opportunity to make beautiful pictures. Another festival consisting in releasing lanterns in the sky, the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival in Taipei held in February for Chinese New Year, is also present in this ranking at 7th position. Oktoberfest or German Beer Festival arrives 4th. But stop talking, here is the list:

  • 1. Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, New Mexico, USA
  • 2. Loykrathong Festival, Thailand
  • 3. Carnival, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • 4. Oktoberfest, Munich, Germany
  • 5. Las Fallas, Valencia, Spain
  • 6. Elephant Festival, Jaipur, India
  • 7. Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, Taipei, Taiwan
  • 8. Pushkar Camel Fair, India
  • 9. Days of the Dead, Mexico
  • 10. Harbin Ice Festival, China

We must admit that this classification is very subjective because it is not based on any investigation or survey, but with the huge amount of festivals that are taking place in Thailand, it would have been surprising to not see it in this top 10.
