Constitution Day in Thailand
Every December 10th is a new holiday in Thailand. It is Constitution Day, which commemorates the day when the country has adopted its first Constitution. In 1932, following a period instability, the Kingdom of Siam (former name of Thailand) which was an absolute monarchy until then became constitutional and Thailand became a democracy.
In the 1930s, the economy is suffering the effects of the Great Depression and the King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) is considered by many too young and inexperienced to deal with the situation. In June 1932, a coup without bloodshed is led by a group of intellectuals and soldiers. An ultimatum and a provisional constitution are presented to the King. Despite its initial refusal, he finally signed the charter which marks the end of absolute monarchy in Thailand. A new revised and permanent constitution was signed the same year, on December 10.
The government became completely independent of the monarchy and the sacred and inviolable character of the monarchy is put in place. It gives it a moral authority and the respect thai people still observe today. The Constitution makes King of Thailand the Head of State, Chief of the Armed and defender of religion.
