Celebrating Songkran in Phuket

Songkran, the Thai New Year begins in a few days, the opportunity for us to launch a series of articles called “Celebrating Songkran in…”. First step: Phuket.

There are of course religious ceremonies in temples. Wat Chalong and Phuket Big Buddha are espcially crowded during Songkran time. Thai people pour scented water on Buddha statues. But in general what most travelers are interested in is the funnier tradition Songkran: the huge water fightd. The greatest battle takes place on Soi Bangla in Patong Beach. Even if you can get wet everywhere !

Phuket Songkran Festival also presents a variety of events: the traditional procession of the statue of Buddha around Patong Beach, the floral parade, the election of Miss Little Songkran and cultural exhibitions presenting local crafts and clothing.

Note that the Phuket Bike Week, also take place in Patong from April 11 to 14 with exhibitions and competitions for bikers from all over Asia, rock concerts, beach parties and parades in the streets of the city. On 18 and 19 April, the festival moves to Phuket town and Saphan Hin for other competitions, parades and shows. To close the week, a Carabao concert, legendary thai rock group will be held on Saturday from 19 at 7 pm.
