Thailand: Constitutional Court void general elections

The Constitution Court on Friday voted 6-3 to void the Feb 2 general election because the poll could not be completed in one day.

The court voted 6 to 3 against to void the election because it could not be organized in a single day and is not consistent with the Constitution . On February 2, the ballot has not been held in 28 districts in eight southern provinces. The court ruled on a motion filed by the Office of the Ombudsman , in which Kittipong Kamolthamwong, Professor of Law at Thammasat University, argued that the election violated the constitution so he asked to invalidate the poll.The Constitutional Court ruled in favor of his request.

The Democratic Party , the main opposition party, which boycotted the election of February 2 , may not challenge a new election , said the spokesman of the party, Chavanond Intarakomalayasut . The ” Red Shirts” (pro- government ) should oppose the verdict, said Mr Somchai . The leader of the anti -government protests , Suthep Thaugsuban , insisted that reforms are implemented before the election.
