Thailand: elections will take place on February 2
The uncertity about the possible postponement of early elections in Thailand just ended. The vote will take place this Sunday. A poll that will be held under high tension, protesters promised to do everything they can to disturb the elections.
Despite the favorable opinion of the Election Commission which recommended to delay the poll for 120 days and the green light of the Constitutional Court, the caretaker government decided to proceed with this Sunday’s election. A decision made public yesterday by the voice of the Deputy Prime Minister Phongthep Thepkanjana and accepted by the commission which however fears of clashes on election day, as indicated one of its members, Somchai Srisutthiyakorn .
Indeed, the tension may be at its worst Sunday for an election that the Democratic Party the main opposition party in Thailand decided to boycott by presenting no candidate. The PRDC, leading anti- government protests promised to do everything to prevent the election to happen and has already shown its power to distrub it by forcing several polling stations to close last Sunday’s when the early vot took placee. The reuslt of February 2 election will be challenged and may not even qualify for representation conditions imposed by the Thai Constitution .
No doubt there will unfortunately be violence this Sunday and it won’t not mark the end of the protest that are lasting for almost three months in Thailand.
