Programme of Loy Krathong festival in Sukhothai
The tradition of Loy Krathong is supposed to be born in Sukhothai, so it is logical that every year a big festival is organized there for the occasion. Taking place every evening in the beautiful scenery of the central part of Sukhothai Historical Park , it is one of the major festivals in Thailand to mark this festival.
SUKHOTHAI LOY KRATHONG FESTIVAL 2019
Here is the official program of Loy Krathong festival in Sukhothai, some events take place every day and others are specific to the opening day of the festival or Loy Krathong Day (November 11th, 2019).
Sound and light shows are held every night. One with an entrance fee at Wat Mahathat and aone other free closing each evening on the pond in front of Wat Sa Si.
It is obviously November 11th that there will be more things but the advantage of this festival is that you can go there one evening before Loy Krathong D-Day and be the D-Day elsewhere like in Chiang Mai for instance.
OTHER FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES
As every year, you will find vendors of krathongs, these small rafts that are put in the water with a candle and a stick of incense tradition of Loy Krathong, demonstrations of martial arts, a scene with music live, a night market and a corner with stalls with a wide choice of food that will allow you to feast for really cheap.
And it is obviously also a unique opportunity to enjoy the Sukhothai Historical Park nicely illuminated at night.
COME TO SUKHOTHAI FOR LOY KRATHONG
To come to Sukhothai , you can fly from Bangkok but it is quite expensive since only Bangkok Airwyas offers this route or take the bus (7 hours) or the plane or the train to Phitsanulok and then the bus (1h30).
-> Book your Bangkok – Sukhothai tickets online
Even if there are buses connecting the bus terminal, the Sukhothai new city and the historical park and they circulate during the festival until the end of the last show, it may be interesting to choose your accommodation in Sukhothai near the Sukhothai Historical Park . It will also allow you to attend the alms offerings to the monks at Wat Tra Pang Thong in the morning.
