60 elephants in Thailand will be saved from hell
We said it quite often on this blog, elephants living in trek camps in Thailand are often, very often, too often abused. 60 of them will soon have a more peaceful life and get the respect they deserve.
Thanks to the work of Elephant Nature Park a trek camp in Kanchanaburi province will be turned into an elephant sanctuary on the model elephant parks the association has already created near Chiang Mai in Surin in Isan.
After three and a half years to try to persuade and invite many managers of elephants trek camps, their owners and their family members to change the way they treat their elephants and make it more human, Chialert Lek, founder of the Elephant Nature Park has successfully convince the largest camp in Kanchanaburi located in Saiyok district to stop offer tourist to ride their elephants and stop elephant shows. They now want to make the lives of their animal more pleasant.
This is Lek herself who announced in a Youtube video.
Her team will come to help work on the project and transform the park into the model of the one she created near Chiang Mai.
This means they will release 60 elephants from work and give them more freedom. No more chains, they will walk freely. No more elephant talent shows. No more tourists on their back, those who will come to visit the camp, will come to take care of them, feed them, bathe them….
We welcome this news and we join Lek’s wish to see more elephant camps in Thailand to do the same.
And it is also good news for tourists. A new elephant sanctuary that respects and loves its residents will soon be open near Kanchanaburi.
We will keep you informed as soon as it is open….
