Thailand launches Bribespot a application to track bribes
While the use of smartphones has more than double a year in Thailand, the applications market is growing fast. The latest application hit is Bribespot Thailand. It offers users to track corruption that gnaws the country for decades. Each victim of a bribe attempt can locate it on a map and shortly detail it.
Bribespot the application to expose corruption in Thailand
Bribespot Thailand is an application that empowers the general public to respond immediately and effectively when they encounter public sector bribery. The response can be made in 1 of 2 ways:
- Via the website
- Via a smart phone application, initially for Android devices and shortly for iPhones
Details of the incident that can be posted include the geographical location of the request for/payment of a bribe; the category of agency involved; and the amount requested/paid. There is also an option for providing additional details of the encounter. The user does not have to provide any personal data whatsoever. The issue of corruption has no instant remedy and it will not disappear overnight. A key factor in slowly bringing about change is to alter the mindset of the general public, to persuade them to shift their attitude from regarding corruption as a norm which they have no power to change and therefore must silently accept, to making them understand that corruption is unacceptable and they can play a part in preventing it. That’s Bribespot Thailand’s purpose. Bribespot says neither they nor any authorities can track users IP addresses thanks to heavy encryption and a European-based server. Although it officially launched just over two weeks ago, Bribespot Thailand’s Facebook page already has over 1,500 likes.
