Visit Lampang !
Located a hundred kilometers before Chiang Mai on the road to the North of Thailand, the city of Lampang is often ignored by travelers nut does not lack of interest with some temples among the finest in the country.
Lampang history and iconic temple
Second largest city in northern Thailand, Lampang was built in the seventh century and developed in the late nineteenth century through trade. The city and its province are home to many temples.
The most important is Wat Phrathat Lampang Luang in Ko Kha district about twenty kilometers from Lampang. This is one of the finest examples of Lanna architecture. Perched on a small hill and surrounded by walls, you access to the temple by a staircase with two Nagas. Inside, there is a 50 meters high chedi with a golden top. The main wihaan features murals on wooden panels. And there is a little building that is unfortunately forbidden to women, the Ho Phra Phuttabat where if you close the door, you can see the inversed image of the temple on a white sheet.
The temples in Lampang city
The city itself hosts many temples, most of them are in Lanna style. The most important is Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao which hosted the Emerald Buddha which is now at Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok in the fifteenth century.
Shortly before there is the smaller Wat Pratutonphueng but there are several interesting temples in Lampang including Wat Si Chum or the Wat Ku Kham to only name a few.
