Loy Krathong lanterns authorized in Chiang Mai
If in Bangkok, sky lanterns will be banned during Loy Krathong, in Chiang Mai, they will be authorized on November 25, the date of thefestival. Good news that are now officially confirmed.
Chiang Mai authorities have decided to ban sky lanterns in five districts during the traditional Yi Peng Festival from November 24th. But they also decided, and that is where good news are that this ban would except November 25 and December 31.
At these dates, launching lanterns in the sky will be allowed even in districts affected by the ban. This means that unlike in Bangkok, there will be sky lanterns in Chiang Mai on November 25, Loy Krathong day.
The sky lanterns will also be allowed on December 31 for New Year’s Eve. So on November 25 and December 31, flights to or from Chiang Mai will be postponed to avoid accidents due to floating lanterns.
This is usually around the Thapae Gate that most Loy Krathong events take place in Chiang Mai : the parade, the sky lanterns releases or even launching krathongs on the maot (although for krathongs, it is more impressive on the banks of Ping River).
There are also beautiful ceremonies in the temples of Chiang Mai like the candles ceremony at Wat Pan Tao.
Enjoy good Loy Krathongs festival which is undoubtedly the most beautiful event in Thai calendar even if it a little more strict this year!
