According to the “Gay Happiness Index” (GHI), Thailand is the Asian country where gays can live the happiest. The country comes 16th worldwide. A good ranking that is not really a surprise.
It is true that in Thai society, homosexuality is very well accepted today even if gay marriage is still not possible. The success of the comedy “Yes or no” which even had a suite (you can watch both movies in our “Thai movies with subtitles“ section) and tells the love story between two girls also proves that Thailand is very open minded on homosexuality.
PlanetRomeo, a dating service has established this gay happiness index. 115,000 people participated in the survey.
Results show that it is in Europe that gays declare to be the happiest and particularly in Northern Europe. Australia is number 20 in the list, United Kingdom comes 23, United States 26,
In Thailand, the survey had 1,549 participants. Thailand is the only country in Asia to be ranked in the top 20, followed by Taiwan (34th) and Cambodia (35th).
In the survey, participants were asked if they felt discriminated and 76% of gay men in Thailand said they don’t suffer from discrimination at work or in school.
